TRIBUTE TO HELEN WEISS
Helen
Weiss, public relations maven and friend to many, died
on Tuesday,
September 9, 2008 at the age
of 83. We are deeply saddened by her
death and will miss her greatly. We
In
2004, Helen was recruited by her long-time friend, Joyce Armstrong, to help Great Rivers Environmental Law Center plan its Annual Dinners. Helen was a tremendous asset due to her
innate knowledge of what makes a good event.
Each year since 2004, Helen has helped with our annual dinner.
In
April of this year, I drove Helen and Joyce around St. Louis to visit several restaurants in order for us to
decide where to hold this year’s event.
A torrential rain fell all day.
Helen, stylishly dressed in her raincoat from Paris, remained cheerful even though we were all
soaked! After we had visited the sites,
Helen decided it was time to warm up at Neiman Marcus and treated us to a lunch
of their hot broth and popovers. The
models came up to greet Helen during the lunch, as did many others in the store
and in Plaza Frontenac. She enjoyed speaking with them and they with her.
Helen
knew how to make work fun! When our committee
met at her condo in July of this year, we changed the starting time from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. for some reason. Helen decided
this made it late enough to serve wine, and she welcomed us with bottles of red
and white wine, pate de foie gras,
cheeses, crackers, fruit, lemonade, and other delicious snacks. We decided to hold our other meetings at 4:00 from then on.
Helen
imparted a joie de vivre to all those around her. The world would be a better place if everyone
had such spirit. Although Helen will not
be with us at our dinner this year at Le Chateau, we will be thinking of her.
